Joan Bugbee-Jackson is an accomplished artist with more than four decades of experience creating beautiful pottery and life-size metal sculptures. Her work has been featured all over the world, in one-woman exhibits and group shows. Additionally, she has contributed sculptures and statues as monuments and permanent installations. Currently, her preferred medium is working with bronze.
Ms. Bugbee-Jackson originally wanted to be a writer, but discovered sculpture and decided to pursue art instead. She received a BA in art from the University of California, San Jose in 1964. She continued to hone her craft and skills with an MA in art and ceramics from the same institution in 1966. She has also been a student of New York City’s National Academy School of Fine Arts. At this venture, she studied the human form and the ways it could be captured in three-dimensional forms. She studied under the tutelage of master sculptor Joseph Kiselewski as an apprentice. In this respect, she learned a great deal about bronze sculpting and the business of art. After more than four years of studying in New York City, Ms. Bugbee-Jackson uprooted to Cordova, Alaska and fell in love with the natural beauty and wilderness. With her move to Alaska, she went on to create some of her most inspired work. She has been commissioned for public and private work and recognized by the local and regional governments.
Throughout her career, Ms. Bugbee-Jackson has instructed pottery for esteemed institutions as the Greenwich House of Pottery, the Craft Institute of America, the Cordova Extension Center and the Prince William Sound Community College. She is a fellow of the National Sculpture Society.
